Another Day - Maybe the Last - December 28

My mind went over and over the possibilities for having to get off the ship for about an hour but then I slept really well for over seven hours on my back. That never happens.  I only woke up sometime around three when there was an emergency call broadcast into the cabin (very unusual).  Went back to sleep quickly afterwards.  I was able to get up okay but as soon as I put my weight on my right leg, the pain was back.  It feels very much like the pain from my piriformis only in a different location (feels like a stake being driven into your muscle every time you step).

I managed to get ready and go up to the Lido for food so I could take my pills.  Lunch had not started but one of the bar servers went in the back and got me some bread.  I sat for some time by the Lido pool and enjoyed the nice weather.

Kathy and Mike came by and sat with me and we had drinks as they ate their lunch.  They then came back to my cabin and we sorted through the two suitcases which mainly contained Linus Blankets.  They took the bag of blankets to give to Marty (who is in charge of the program on the world and is boarding tomorrow) and also took away my Coke Zero collection in case I don't return.  I really appreciate their efforts to help me.

I went to 4:30 trivia and then had a 5pm reservation for the Pinnacle Grill.  Rich (richwmn for those on Cruise Critic) joined me and we had a nice conversation during dinner.  The place was packed with last night diners.

We then went to watch the end of the Jukebox Rogues third show and then went to Music Trivia which was on Motown.  Our team won.

My appointment with the doctor is at 8am tomorrow.  I know I need to leave the ship to get an MRI but I am keeping up a slim hope that something can be found and done before the World Cruise starts on January3.  Not sure if HAL will even let me do that but tomorrow will be a very interesting day.

Trivia - We had 11 out of 17 and the winning team had 14.

1.  What is Japanese horseradish better known as?

2.  What does VSOP mean on a bottle of brandy?

3.  How many different colors were in the first box of Crayola crayons?

4.  What is the name for a group of monkeys?

5.  What was the first toy advertised on TV?

1.  wasabi

2.  Very Superior Old Pale

3.  8

4.  troop

5.  Mr. Potato Head

Almost a Medical Disembark - December 27

And so the saga of woe continues.  I slept for about three hours and when I got up and stepped up into the bathroom. I twisted my left side and I could feel muscles pulling.  Great - now my left and right sides were out of commission.  I was afraid if I got back in bed, I would never get out, so I sat on the sofa.

I fell asleep sitting up for a few minutes at a time until my head flopped to the side.  I played games on the computer for some while, killing time until the medical center opened at 8.  My plan was to get up and get dressed about 7:30 to go down there.  My plan was foiled by the fact I could not stand up.  I ended up calling 911 again, who sent my room stewards and someone with a wheelchair.

With much pain (and a few screams on my part - I am a pain wuss), they got me up and into the chair and I was off to my new home-away-from-home.  When I got there, Dr. Vos was not happy that I was not improving more and that this new pain would not help.  She said if the next IV didn't help, she was going to medically disembark me - in Cozumel, Mexico!  My Mexican is limited to si, no, taco, burrito, and a few more.  I did start crying at that point and pleaded with her not to do it.

Luckily, the IV helped the new left side strain and I was able to get out of bed twice on my own and walk to the bathroom and later to the wheelchair for the ride back to my cabin.  I am due to see her again on the 29th (when we return to Fort Lauderdale) at 8am for another evaluation.

From the way I feel right now, I am not very optimistic.  The difficulty I am having walking because of the right-side pain is making my life miserable.  As little as I want to give up the world cruise, there is no way I could enjoy it if it takes everything I have just to get to the Lido.

I am hoping and praying that the meds will kick in (I am on day four of the prednisolone and day three of the others) so there is still a chance.

After hobbling back from the Lido, I took a three hour nap in the bed (both the doctor and the nurse repeatedly told me not to sleep on the sofa) and from which I was able to get up from with only minor pain. I killed some more time on the computer.

At about 6:40, I started getting ready for a 7pm dinner at the Pinnacle with Kathy and Mike.  We had a very enjoyable dinner and they offered to take a couple of things off of my hands if I do get disembarked on Thursday.

We talked until 9:45 and then back to my cabin.  The front right leg pain has ceased for the time being (yea!), but my right backside pain still feels like a stake is being driven into me and is very much like the pain when I had the piriformis problem earlier in the year, only in a different location.

I have had such nice comments from so many of you and I appreciate all of them.  Please continue keeping me in your thoughts.

Smooth sailing until next time!

Rain/Rough Seas 1 - Cayman Islands 0 - December 26

I had a very good night sleeping and was awakened about 8 with Kimberly (Cruise and Travel Director) announcing we had been cleared but tender service was not yet ready.  A few minutes later the Captain announced that he was going to check the tender operation because of the high seas and rain.  After a few minutes more, he announced the port was canceled.  Kimberly then said to stay tuned for updates on new activities for the day.  It was also announced that there would be selected cocktails and sodas available from 1-2 at the Lido Bar.

My right back side was hurting so I took a nerve pill without food and it knocked me out for two and a half hours (she had warned me that they caused drowsiness).  When I awoke my mind was rather fuzzy and I kept wondering why I was so droggy (droggy?), although my mind said that didn't sound right.  I was putting drowsy and groggy together and it took me a moment or two to realize this.  It was time for some food (even though my appetite is still not back).

After lunch, I sat out by the Lido Pool (got my free drinks) and Kathy and Mike came and sat with me and we talked.

After playing 4pm trivia, I changed for dinner (it was a dressy night) because I planned to go as a walk-in after the 6:30 Music Industry trivia.  Turns out I got my table faster as a walk-in just after 7pm than when I make a reservation.

At this point my right back side and upper right leg were hurting and I was walking so slowly I had three people stop to ask if they could help.

I hobbled to the show which was the Jukebox Rogues again, this time with show tunes.

By the time I got back to my cabin, I was completely wiped out and went to bed at 10:19.  But that is just where the latest story begins.  Stay tuned!

4pm trivia - We had 11 out of 18 and two teams tied with 12

6:30 Music Industry - We had a dismal 5 and the winners had 13

Oh, What A Night! - December 25

And I don't mean that in the good sense as in the Four Seasons song.  It was probably the roughest night of my life after the night I was in labor.  I couldn't get comfortable in the bed, went to the sofa and sat sitting up for about 45 minutes, then laid down on the sofa for a part of an hour.  Back to the bed, repeat, repeat, repeat.  I finally got about two hours sleep on the bed but getting out was excruciating.  I couldn't walk, sit, or lie down without massive pain.  I started crying and then called 911 (first time I think I have ever dialed those numbers).

A man showed up (I think from Guest Services) and helped me get a robe, glasses and key card together - none of which I could do on my own at that point.  A few minutes later, a very sweet nurse name Anemarie (spelling I think is not quite right), came with a wheelchair and I was off to the medical center.

Dr. Vos checked me out again and still believes it's muscular but she said that calming the nerves would help the muscles relax.  So, over the next four hours, I had an IV of pain reliever and then one to rehydrate me.

Since I had lost my appetite and my sinuses are acting up, they also gave me a Covid test which was negative.  I was sent back to my cabin with three more prescriptions to add to what I am already taking. I have had to make a list to know when to take them all.

Needed to eat lunch since a number of those pills need to be after food.  I still wasn't hungry (did I just say that about me who is always hungry?).  I ended up with my ultimale comfort food for when I am not 100% - rice and rolls.  I was able to get around better and even made a lap around the Sea View Pool and then sat by the Lido Pool getting some fresh air after lunch.

Later in the day, I got a call from the medical center (reinforcing the idea that when it rains it pours) that I also had a UTI.  The doctor paid a house call and brought me the medicine.  She was very pleased that I was progressing and the pain was receding.  We changed my follow-up appointment from Monday to Tuesday.  I am now taking Prednisolone, Nitrofurantoin, Naproxen, Paracetamol, and Gabapentin.

Before the doctor arrived, I felt good enough to unpack a few things and sit down and knit.  I have lacked the energy to even knit for the last few days.😱

Played 4pm and 6:30pm trivia and then had dinner at 7:45. Have I mentioned recently how much I hate open dining.  My reservation was for 7:45. I got there a couple of minutes early and waited in line.  I sat down at my table (Presty showed me to my seat for those who know him) at 8:09.  People continue to dress up (for the most part) for "Festive" night tonight.  Christmas dinner was nice but I hate having a different server each day.

After I left dinner, I met Lorraine and Lee (who were also on the Grand Africa) and I sat and talked with them until 10.  I checked to see if I had any drinks left for today on the "Have It All" program.  I got all 15 today - my stash is growing with eight days to go.

This morning about 8:30 (while I was trying to find some comfortable position), the captain announced that a small flying object had been spotted and they would keep a lookout for it.  A few minutes later, he announced that it looked like a sleigh being pulled my small animals.  After another few minutes, the captain said that it was confirmed it was Santa Claus and he was headed to the stage with gifts for all the good boys and girls and they needed to meet him there.  I saw the pictures as I was coming back from dinner and there were many happy little faces.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday, whatever you are celebrating.  I also want to thank all of you who have sent me well-wishes and suggestions and continue to read through my tales of woe!

We were in Ocho Rios today and are headed to Grand Cayman tomorrow.  I wasn't planning on getting off the ship, but the doctor told me I should take things slowly.  I booked an easy tour for the next to the last day of the trip but, because I get $200 of shore excursions with the Have It All program, there will be no monetary loss if I don't go.

4pm trivia - We tied three other teams for the win.

1.  What is the main ingredient in gingerbread?

2.  What country is the largest exporter of Christmas trees?

3.  Google is the most visited webxite.  What is second?

5.  If your luggage tags read DXB, where are you headed?

1.  flour

2.  Canada

3.  YouTube

4.  Maroon 5

5.  Dubai

6:30 Trivia - Christmas theme. 4 teams tied with thirteen including us.  We lost.  The question was how many children under 18 were on the ship.  The answer was 309.

1. What liquor is traditionally used in a Christmas trifle?

2.  What was the original title of "The Little Drummer Boy"?

3.  What vegetable allows reindeer to fly?

4.  What actor won an Oscar for playing Santa Claus?

2.  The Carol of the Drummer

3.  carrots

4.  Edwin Gwynne

5.  stink, stank, stunk

 A Mental Reset - December 24

Although my sleeping on the couch went well, the pain was still awful, so I called and made an appointment at the medical center.  What a difference from Dr. Smoky (that's what I am calling the doctor on Zaandam as I don't know his name and saw him all the time out on the back deck smoking).

I saw Dr. Odette Vos and she had an amazing bedside manner.  After answering all her questions, she decided it was a chronic muscle problem.  She ruled out nerves and bone because of the way it moved from place to place - left to right, front to back, upper leg to torso.  She said Holly (I have named my Christmas rollator that) was the best thing I could have done.  The side-to-side thing with the cane would have continued aggravating muscles and shifting the pain.  She was very positive and for the first time in a few days, I really believe I will be able to do the world cruise.

She prescribed 14 days of prednisolone (she said 5 was not nearly enough, like on Zaandam) and gave me a cortisone and anti-inflammatory shot, as well.  I can still take the ibuprofen and acetaminophen, if needed.  She will be talking to me again in about 48 hours.

I took my first dose of medicine after lunch in the Lido.  I then emptied another suitcase before afternoon trivia.  Afterwards, I rested for a bit (just sitting and relaxing, not snoozing) until getting ready for a Dressy night.

Who says people don't like to dress up?  Most everyone looked very elegant and the little kids were adorable.  The photographers were doing a booming business.

My first night in the Dining Room and it was all the craziness I remembered from my one cruise on Royal Caribbean where we had anytime dining.  I arrived a few minutes before my reservation time of 7:45 but it still took about ten minutes to be seated.

Holly and I made it to the stage for the Jukebox Rogue's performance of "Frankie's Guys" which featured the songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  I met up with Kathy and Mike on the way in and we sat together.

I would have liked to have gone to the 11:00 Christmas songs but I have limited energy.  Unless I feel amazing, I will not be getting off in Jamaica tomorrow.

I have been quite lax with pictures but hopefully, soon I will have my energy back and not fall asleep so quickly in the evening.

4:30 Trivia - We had 14 out of 18 and the winning team had 17

1.  The Landlord's Game is now known as what?

2.  What is the southernmost capital in Asia?

3.  To what muralist was Freida Kahlo married?

4.  What was the title of the fourth Harry Potter book?

5.  The inventor of what cylindrical food container wanted his ashes buried in it?

1.  Monopoly

2.  Jakarta

3.  Diego Rivera

4.  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

5.  Pringles can

Half Moon Cay - December 23

Half Moon Cay is Holland America's Private Island in the Bahamas.  I was here in 2015.  I did not go ashore today - here is why.

Last night was horrible.  I started out sitting up on the sofa but could not get comfortable so I got in bed.  I almost could not get out of it again.  Rolling on my side and putting my legs down was excruciating.  For a time, I thought I might have to call for help.  Once I managed on my own, I then decided to put my pillows up against the wall at the end of the sofa and my legs on the sofa.  Much better and I could get off the couch more easily.  Looks like I will be sleeping there for the foreseeable future.

This night was another of my really low points.  I seem to be able to do less each day.  I may try the doctor on this ship tomorrow.

Although I had a delicious meal in the Pinnacle Grill, I really don't have much of an appetite.  On a normal day, that would be a good thing but I have become uncaring about a lot of things.  My cabin is a mess and I did not unpack anything I didn't need today.  In the back of my mind is the thought I might have to cancel the world voyage.

The bright spot of the day was trivia.  We won both games!   Rich and Bob are very good.

4pm trivia - We won with 13 out of 18

1.  What is the meaning of the "i" in iPad and iPhone?

Kids, Kids, Kids, and More Kids - December 22

As you know I like the longer cruises.  Longer cruises mean fewer children.  Add to that the fact that HAL ships don't have water slides, skating rinks, costumed characters, or flow riders, it has the reputation of being a floating seniors' home.  So, seeing hundreds (rumor has it at least 400 but it could easily be more) of babies through teenagers is a tad disconcerting.

Thank goodness for my rollator or I would have never made it to the ship.  After schlepping my two big suitcases downstairs (one at a time), I still had my purse which was full of usual purse things plus money, documents, my phone, my iPad Mini, and my laptop. I also had my duffel bag which was full of all that it had come off the ship with and all the things I purchased in Fort Lauderdale (mainly pain relievers of one sort or another).  I would never have been able to carry them but they rode nicely on the seat of the rollator.

The taxi came at about 11:20 and the driver was so nice taking care of me that he got a generous tip with a Christmas bonus.  While I was in the taxi, I received a phone call from my orthopedic doctor's nurse.  My friend, Frances, convinced me to call, just in case they could prescribe something for me.  Since my last visit with them had been over six months ago and this was an altogether different issue, she didn't think they could do anything but promised to call me back if they could figure anything out (I did not get a call).

Although my check-in time was not until noon and it was about 11:35, once again they did not ask and I was directed through security, they scanned my passport, sent me to the elevator, and into the line to get on the ship - which was the only slow spot in the procedure.  I was on the ship by noon.

I had lunch in the Lido (selections look very much like Zaandam's although they don't seem to have the self-serve taco bar - someone makes them for you) and started collecting my Coke Zeroes.  After lunch, my dinner friends from 2018 and 2020, came over and we sat and talked for a while.

Sail-away was a little after 4:15 and I was out on deck and met up with Rich from the Cruise Critic Roll Call (we had never met in person before).

When I returned to my cabin, all six suitcases had arrived.  Two were on the bed.  I tried to unpack one but didn't get far because I was hurting when I bent over, stood up, picked up anything, or just about any other movement.  I found the bottle of Tylenol and took two and rested for a bit.

After a very unsatisfactory dinner in the Lido, I changed my mind about eating dinner there each night.  I may break my own rule about dressing up for dinner in the dining room (since it might take me until February to finish unpacking).

I played trivia with Rich and a lady named Betty.  I didn't get far afterwards and ended up doing music trivia with Rich (who was very good).  That was the end of my social calendar for the day.

I met my room stewards (or I guess I should say steward and stewardess [or is the feminine distinction passe?]), Frances and Eka.  They were so nice and actually put things from the first suitcase I had opened away for me and then put the suitcase under the bed.

I totally ran out of steam early (I only got three hours of sleep last night because I could not get comfortable) and was hurting, so I went to bed after only typing the title of this entry (I am working on it as everyone is off frolicking on Half Moon Cay).

Update:  I lost connection with the internet while this was posting and had thrown out the trivia questions before I could get back online.

Smooth sailing until next time!

Changes/Cutbacks

I have been asked by many people to discuss the differences between the Grand Africa and the other "Grand" Voyages I have been on. This was discussed frequently onboard so I compiled a list, in no particular order, of what I had experienced or others mentioned.

For any others who were on this cruise, please share your experiences.

Cabins

1) Nightly service only when requested.

2) Chocolates and towel animals only when requested.

3) No slippers (I don't know if the suites got them or not).

Dining Room

1) The old "always available" items (steak, chicken, etc.) are now part of the regular menu.  Because of this there are fewer rotating foods available for selection.

2) There are only three "different" desserts each night besides the "always available" ice cream and sundae.

3)  The choices seem to repeat more frequently than in the past.

4)  The once "always available" shrimp cocktails now have an $8.50 surcharge.

5)  The entire dining room was not decorated for special days (like Halloween) or theme nights.  Besides the decorations, in the past the servers had special vests, ties, shirts, hats, etc. for these nights - none of these on this cruise.

The Lido

1)  Again, the choices were very repetitive.  For lunch there was a hot meat and fish (that rotated) but the other choices were the same: a pot pie, a taco, and soups as well as the sides (baked potato, french fries, mac&cheese, green vegetable).  There was fresh fruit, deviled eggs, and almost the same cold cuts and cheeses every day.

2) The orchids that used to be on the tables in the Lido are gone.

Activities

1)  Likely the biggest mess-up was that there were no lecturers for the first two weeks.  Many people find the lectures very important and were not happy.  Note:  Once the lecturers arrived most were very good (especially Kate Ross).

2)  No cooking demos

3)  There were more movie nights in the World Stage especially on port evenings.

4) Some of the extra charge special dining evenings were on port nights or the night before.  Not really good timing on a cruise with numerous sea days.

Miscellaneous

1)  Many people did not like that the Cruise Director and the Port Presenter are now the same person.  For shorter cruises, I don't think this would be a problem but for the longer ones, it makes the Cruise Director less "visible" around the ship.

2)  There are no longer any port guides.  As bad as the maps were in them, you at least had a general idea of the layout of the area.  I know many people use their cell phones but in some areas it is not advisable to be flashing them around.  You can get a printed map from Guest Services.

3) "Pillow Gifts" are one of the perks of a "Grand".  For the first three (ceramic box, a HAL tote bag, and a box of chocolates) there was only one per cabin.  This is fine with some couples but these are built into the cost of the cruise and each person deserves their own.  This was especially bad for roommates who each paid their own fare.  There were numerous complaints and for the last couple of gifts, there was one per person.

There are also fewer "Pillow Gifts" because they are usually tied to Formal nights that have been cut back with the introduction of "Dressy Nights".

4) On the topic of Formal and Dressy nights:  Nobody knows why HAL suddenly started this.  Nobody can really give an easy explanation for the difference between the two.  I noticed that many people wore their more formal wear on both.

5)  There was a major blunder with the distribution of information/luggage tags for disembarkation.  Normally, they will ask about your plans in advance and then a few days before the end of the cruise, you receive a letter with the time for you to depart along with color coded tags.  On this cruise, they put out the tags with no explanation or notice by Guest Services.  They quickly disappeared.  The day before disembarkation most (maybe all??) had not received a letter.  From my personal experience, I went to Guest Services just before 1pm the last day and was told my cabin steward would have the letter and tags shortly.  Still nothing at 5pm.  Called Guest Services at 6 and got the same answer.  Nothing just before 9pm (with bags due out in the hall in less than three hours).  Back to Guest Services after the show and was finally given the letter and tags.  A friend of mine received two different packets with two different sets of tags.

The really trivial

1) Marshmallows - marshmallows seem to be the new whipped cream on board.  Where you might expect whipped cream (like on the ice cream sundae) there are now marshmallows.  One of the extra charge nights in the Pinnacle (I think the surcharge was over $100) had a marshmallow dessert.

2)  The bar snacks in the Crow's Nest (not sure of other bars) consisted of only peanuts.  In the past they have had goldfish and popcorn as well as mixed nuts on special nights.

3)  The Chocolate Surprise evening was the worst I have seen.  Once again, marshmallows (with part dipped in chocolate with sprinkles) made an appearance and was not very popular.  They had a hard time getting people to take them and many were left on flat surfaces.  Supposedly (because I never tasted one), there was a mini cupcake that was delicious but they were gone by the time I left the late show.  I did try two other things - chocolate covered somethings (not sure what) and a chocolate tart - both were left unfinished.

The Good

1)  Activities like bridge, arts and crafts, drawing, watercolors, etc. were excellent as usual.

2)  There was a rabbi, minister, and priest (who had to leave for a little due to a family loss but came back) present.

3)  The laundry did a great job.  Most times when I put my bag out on my bed at 10am it was back that evening.

4) The In-Room Dining staff were amazing while I was in solitary.

5) The crew.  Although some were on their first contract, they were out to please and did a great job as always.

Three out of four ain't bad - December 21

I had four things I planned to accomplish - 1) go to an urgent care facility, 2) get cash for the cruise from an ATM, 3) get a pedicure, and 4) get a haircut.  I was able to do 3 of these but not the really important one.

Starting out around 10:30 my first stop was at an urgent care facility.  I explained my situation and the lady asked me if I had insurance.  Yes, Medicare.  They don't take Medicare.  I left and found a bench nearby and googled "urgent care facilities near me" and called the closest.  No, they did not take Medicare.  It then dawned on me that this is Florida - every other person has Medicare and they don't want to deal with the hassle of all that paperwork.  Let the old folks go to their personal doctor.

My other errands were done easily.  There was a Chase Bank on my way to the shopping center and got the cash.  Then I went to the nail salon I had eyed when here in October and got a great pedicure.  Lunch was at the Mexican restaurant, "La Bamba" where I had a delicious lunch and then Great Clips for a fantastic haircut.

With my chores checked off my list, I went to Publix and picked up a few more pain patches (I now have enough to get to New Zealand if needed [let's hope it's not]) and then a little retail therapy at TJ Maxx where I found a cute shirt with giraffes on it.

When I returned to the hotel, my rollator had arrived.  It was not, however, fully assembled as the lady had told me when I ordered it.  The very nice lady at the desk said the handyman could put the last few pieces on it but it would take a little time because he was on break.  Assuring her I wasn't going anywhere, I said that was fine.  About a half hour later she came to my door with it.  It really is useful already.

Since I had a big lunch, I was not hungry at dinnertime, so I stayed in and had goldfish and a chocolate chip cookie when I got hungry (who says I don't eat nutritiously?).

The weather people down here are freaking out because there are going to be low temps in the 40s for Christmas (the horror of it!!!).  I hope those of you in really cold areas stay warm and toasty and have a great holiday.

I spent time talking to my friends Carolyn and Frances and talked to my daughter and grandkids.  Started repacking the one suitcase I opened in preparation for returning to the sea tomorrow.

Smooth sailing until next time.

Merry Christmas to me!

Tot Ziens, Zaandam - December 20

I woke up about 6am right around the time we were pulling into Port Everglades.  I rolled over and went back to sleep for about 45 minutes.  I went up for breakfast and had two fairly good pancakes and juice.

Leaving the ship at about 8:40, I was laden down with my purse, a duffel (not the huge one they gave us), and my cane.  When I got into the terminal, the power was out.  Not sure what was wrong but everyone had to walk down a flight of stairs to get to hall where the luggage was including those in wheelchairs and with walkers.  There were people who worked there helping us down and carrying things.  Since many were already off, I had no problem getting a porter.  Finding my luggage was a little harder since it was so dark.  One of the officials was using her flashlight so people could see their bags.

Getting a taxi was also easy and I was at the hotel a little after 9 but my room wasn't ready until about 12:15. I talked with a friend, played games on my phone, fell asleep sitting up for a couple of minutes, etc. until I could go to my room.  There are no bellboys so I had to get my bags upstairs by myself (the nice lady at the desk did put them on a luggage cart).  I didn't realize that "extended stay" meant people live here week to week and things are bare bones.

I was really tired so I sat for some time and then ventured across the street to Einstein Bagels.  I had received a gift card when I retired (10 years ago) and never used it until today.  I got a large orange juice and some bagels.  I ate one there and brought the others back.

Stopped in at the Dollar Tree for a few things and then came back because I was exhausted.  I actually slept for about an hour.  I then went to Walgreen's and dropped $100 on things to help manage my hip pain (lots of various patches as well as stocking up on Advil and Tylenol, as well as a Diet Coke and some goldfish).  It rained on the way back but it is only two blocks and the rain was light so I was not drenched.

Had one of the bagels and some goldfish for dinner and then talked to another friend from home.

I am going to make it an early night (for me that means before midnight).

Smooth sailing until next time.

It's Almost Over - December 19

A few of us got together for our last Sit and Stitch.  After lunch, I stopped by Guest Services because, like many others, I still had not gotten luggage tags (usually we get them days in advance).  The girl I spoke with said they would be delivered by my room steward later in the day.

I went to the "Origins Story" of Holland America who will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2023.  I had seen the video at the start of the cruise but the Captain spoke and many of the crew came out on the stage.

For the rest of the afternoon I played trivia twice, knitted, and went by crafts because Nancy had a gift for us (a pretty necklace).

Returned to my cabin and still no luggage tags at 5pm.  Called Guest Services at 6 and was told again they would be delivered.  When I left for dinner at 7:20, still no labels.  In the meantime, Josh from Luggage Forward came by to change the tags on my two bags they will be keeping until Thursday.

I came back after dinner and still no luggage tags.  I went to the show (a comedian who was actually funny) and then back to Guest Services.  She gave me the luggage tags and the letter about when to disembark (which I also had not gotten).  I have to be off between 8 and 9 - I plan to be as close to 9 as possible.

I had all bags out by 10:45 (the letter said by 11) and then relaxed for a bit with my last Coke Zero.

 Zaandam’s Got Talent – December 18

Since I didn’t have any plans until 10:30, I planned to sleep until at least 9.  Unfortunately, I woke up at 7am and started thinking about all I had to do over the next five days and could not get back to sleep.  I packed some and then met Judy (Bob), Bob, and Sandy for the last Sunday Brunch.

I was the only one of the team at 1pm trivia and then went down to get a seat for the Crew Talent Show.  I was there 35 minutes early and could not get a good seat but at least I could see part of the show.  I am always amazed by the work the crew put into the show after they have finished doing all their regular work.  Quite a few of the other crew watched to cheer on their friends and co-workers.  There were 12 acts and the show lasted an hour and 50 minutes so no crafts today.  If you are ever on a cruise with a crew show, go to it!

After trivia, I met up with Judy (Dr’s mom) and two of her friends for a toast to the end of the cruise with some bubbly sent to her by her travel agency.

All present at dinner and then it was on to the second show of the B.B. King’s All Stars.  They were just as good as last time and had even more people up and dancing.

Our last pillow gift arrived.  It is a huge duffel bag (which, if it was full, I would not be able to lift) which folds into itself.

A Very Brief Visit to Old San Juan - December 17

We were told a few days ago that we would not be docking right in the old town because we had to have a Coast Guard inspection.  We also had to go through immigration since this was our first U.S. port.  Yesterday, we received a notice that there would be four groups called to leave the ship for immigration and nobody could return to the ship until there was a zero count. Since these groups were labeled A, B, C, and D, I expected them to be called in order, which they were not.  A and C were groups with people on HAL excursions.  B was for those with independent plans and D for those not planning on anything but getting back on the ship after being seen by immigration.

Group B was called first although a lot of people were still around the ship.  About an hour later it was announced that everyone needed to get off and be processed.  Not sure if A and C were only called in the World Stage (meeting place for excursions) or what.

I had not planned on leaving until Group D was called because it was raining and was supposed to clear up later but when I heard the announcement, I decided I had better go.

Getting off the ship was not easy because the gangway was very steep and wet.  Many of us had to be helped down and then there was the walk in the rain (but I had brought my umbrella).  What I hadn't thought of was my cane kept slipping on the wet pavement.

There was no line and I walked up to the officer, he had me look into a camera, looked at my passport and off I went.

The shuttle took about 10 minutes to get us to Plaza de Colon which I recognized from my tour in 2018.  My hip was really hurting (have I mentioned my hip now hurts more than the leg?) and I was worried about the cane slipping so I did a walk about 2/3 of the way around the square, took a few pictures, and then waited for the shuttle.

I got back to the terminal at about 11 and they had still not zeroed out the ship, so people were still sitting or standing in the terminal.  As I arrived, Vicki and Dave (trivia partners) were leaving.  I asked if they saw a drug store to buy me some of the heat pain patches (I had used one yesterday that really helped).  Dave said that was where they were headed.

I found Judy (Lee) and Rich and talked to them until we were allowed back on.

After resting my leg, I had lunch in the Lido and Judy (Dr's mom) came by and we talked and found out that we both play Wordus (like Wordle but an app so you can play as much as you want).

It was such a nice day (the sun actually came out), I sat on the Promenade deck and knitted (admittedly I took a short snooze) for over an hour before going back to my cabin.

While I had been waiting for the shuttle I talked to a lady with a rollator and I mentioned how the cane was slipping.  She said she had used a cane but found the rollator more reliable.  She mentioned a company in Fort Lauderdale that rent them for cruises, so I sent them an e-mail asking for a quote.  No response yet and likely won't have one until Monday.  I also took Rich's for a test drive in the terminal and found it distributed my weight better and did not put as much pressure on my left side.

Just before dinner, my room steward brought me a bag from Vicki.  She had gotten me the patches and I put one on before going to dinner.

Only Bob, Judy, and Sherry for dinner tonight which was not very good.  One of the few meals I found disappointing.  There was a "Barn Dance" at 9:30 but I did not go.

Two sea days until we are back in Fort Lauderdale.

Smooth sailing until next time!

On a Rescue Mission - December 15

This morning we had a display of the Linus blankets made on this cruise as well as other items made (cross-stitch, socks, a top, a dragon, and quilting).  There were a total of 21 blankets made.  It was outside of the Ocean Bar and many people stopped by to look as they passed.

Just after 11, the captain announced that we were turning around.  Last night they had received a notice that a yacht had capsized and to be on the lookout.  At that point we were over 350 miles from the presumed location.  This morning however, something was seen floating in the water and so we turned around to get a better look.

About 20 minutes later he announced that the item had been in the water for a long time and had sea life growing on it so it could not have come from the yacht.  Even so, there would still be a lookout kept for any other floating debris.

Later in the afternoon the captain announced that another yacht had rescued five people floating in the water so we did not need to look any further.  These were very lucky people since we are hundreds of miles from land.

I hadn't planned on going to crafts but after I finished my dessert (I usually eat lunch before trivia and dessert after), Sandy came along and we sat and talked until almost 3 so I stayed for crafts.

I went back to the gym and the attendant showed me how to use the elliptical machine but said I needed closed-toe shoes which I had already packed.  So, no exercise today.

Tonight was our final Formal Night so we had the typical "Gala Night" menu.  Most people looked very nice.  The Zaandam Singers and Dancers performed their last show, "All For Love".  At 9:30 there as a "Chocolate Surprise" on Deck 5.  I think the surprise was that the chocolate was not very good.  They did not have quite the variety from the past and the one item I heard was really good (a chocolate mini-cupcake) was gone before I even saw one.  There were lots of marshmallows with a little chocolate on the bottom and sprinkles - most of which were left half eaten (Not sure what the deal is with marshmallows on this cruise - if you get a sundae in the restaurant, it has marshmallows instead of whipped cream on it).  There were also chocolate covered things (not sure what but they were not very good) and a chocolate fudge tart that I found awful.

In the Ocean Bar there was "A Night in Hollywood" with music, a red carpet, and large cut-outs (with which you could have your picture taken).

We did not receive a "Pillow Gift" tonight which we usually do on Formal Nights.  Word has it that they will be brought on in San Juan and that they are duffel bags.  Stay tuned to see if the rumors prove true.

We gain another hour tonight.
